Abstract

The preferential tariff agreement between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) has provided an important platform for assessing the effects of reducing tariff barriers on the competitiveness of selected products. The present study, focusing on the two agri-food and textile products, seeks to measure the impact of this agreement on Iran's industrial competitiveness index. Imprort and export tariffs have decreased after immplementing preferential tariff agreement between Iran and EAEU. The panel data from 2010 to 2023 with a generalized moments approach, shows that reducing import tariffs has a positive and significant effect on competitiveness, and vise versa. The export has had a positive and significant effect on the competitiveness index. It emphaside the role of trade expansion on industrial development. The import has had a negative and significant effect on competitiveness. The implementation of the preferential tariff agreement has improved the competitiveness of the country's agri-food and textile industries. Constructive steps to conclude preferential tariff agreements with regional economic blocs, reform the tariff structure, improve logistics and customs infrastructure, and strengthen export-oriented policies can pave the way for sustainable improvement in competitiveness and Iran's effective entry into international trade.
